Designs/Designer

At 40,000 square feet, and featuring the design input of over 400 local athletes, the Charles River Skatepark will be one of the largest and most innovative facilities of its kind in the nation. Surrounded by several new parks in Cambridge that are being created as a result of the Big Dig, this concrete facility will be situated under the ramps that lead to the Leonard Zakim/Bunker Hill Bridge.

The conceptual design was developed by Wormhoudt Inc. with the imput of local athletes. In December of 2007, Grindline Design Group was hired to do the final design/build of the skatepark project. It will feature transitional and street elements tailored to athletes of various skill levels, and is designed to accommodate skateboarders, inline skaters, and BMX bikers. In addition, it will offer spectators a place to gather and be entertained by elegant and daring displays of talent.

The skatepark will be surrounded on three sides by new parklands. These adjacent parklands will feature tennis courts, playing fields, shaded meadows, playgrounds, waterfront promenades, and parking.
